8 Şubat 2007 tarihinde Lawrence Summers'ın ardından Harvard Üniversitesi rektörlüğüne seçildi.^[3] İlk açıklamasında "Ben Harvard Üniversitesi'nin kadın rektörü değilim. Ben Harvard Üniversitesi'nin rektörüyüm" diyerek döneminin karşıtlıkların giderileceği bir dönem olmasını diledi.^[4]
