Rhinocereos cinsi içerisindeki türler tek boynuzları oluşuyla diğer gergedanlardan hemen ayırt edilir. "Rhinoceros" Yunancadan gelmektedir. "Rhino" burun, "ceros" boynuz anlamına gelir. Bu tür içerisinde iki tür bulunmaktadır; Hint gergedanı (Rhinoceros unicornis) ve Cava gergedanı (Rhinoceros sondiacus).
